Croatia National Parks

see on map trin: We rented a car to visit three National Parks. Again, we used GPS but somewhere between Provence and Croatia she developed schizophrenia. She couldn't keep anything straight and was constantly “recalculating.” We finally turned her off and reverted to an old fashion map. Taking the scenic route did allow us to enjoy the beautiful Croatian countryside where old farmers still use sickles in the fields. The trees are so green and the soil is so dark.

The first park we visited was Plitvice. We both agree, if you are going to Croatia and your time is limited, visit this park.

Plitvice can be seen in a day. The trails are easy. The colors of the pools change throughout the day as the light moves.

Mike put this picture on here. I think it is kind of gross but I will tell you I ate the lamb both nights we were there and it was delicious. It was before I saw the actual spit but I don't know that it would have changed a thing.

One thing that impressed us in Croatia (Italy too) were the tunnels. They are really long. When we exited this three mile long tunnel, we were on the other side of a mountain range and in a new climate.

Once we got closer to the coast GPS started to act normal again. She really is a marriage saver when driving in foreign countries. So, we thought she deserved a picture on the blog.

Paklenica National Park is a mountain climbing mecca in Europe. We hiked a trail along the valley floor where we watched the climbers contorting their bodies while climbing up the rock cliffs. At the end of the day, Mike wanted to take up the sport but I don't like the idea.

Although it is pretty, this park is not on my must see list for Croatia. Unless of course you are a mountain climber.

That night we stayed in the small coastal town, Brodarica, where we enjoyed some seafood risotto. Italian cuisine was served in the restaurants throughout Croatia. Especially in the north.

Krka was the final park we visited in Croatia. It is series of natural pools linked by waterfalls that feed into a large lake.

We prepared for hiking but like Plitvice, the trails are mostly wooden walkways. There were also boat tours you could take around the bigger lake.

Crepe time.

A frog puffing out his cheeks getting ready to let out another loud croak.

Taking off the boots at the end of the day. Mike tried to close the hatch back right after taking the picture. It was hilarious.
